Tutoring to Learn Essay Writing, Speech Writing & Presentation Skills
Don’t Be Daunted – Everyone Can Master Writing Essays, Speeches and Presentations
Do You Keep Getting Stuck With Your Writing?
Writing essays, speeches and presentations is a complex task so many people have difficulty knowing where to start or get writer’s block in the middle. You will be surprised how easy these sorts of writing can become when you learn how to break them down into small steps. Once you have learned the procedure you can work on improving your skills on the steps that you are least proficient at.
This systematic approach makes it much easier to benefit from the feedback you get from your examiners or audience because it is much easier to isolate the weaknesses you need to work on. Always seek and analyse feedback so you will be able to keep on improving and fine tuning your communication skills for the rest of your life.
Get Clarity Before You Start Writing
It is impossible to communicate well unless you are clear about every aspect of the process:
-
Be Clear About Your Topic:
There is no point preparing a great essay or presentation that is not on topic. Many students get poor marks for their work because they do not stick to the topic – they rush straight into doing the writing without making sure about what they are supposed to be communicating.
-
Be Clear About Your Content:
It is not enough to understand your content, you need to be able to explain it to people so they will be able to understand it – and the easier you make it for them, the more effective you will be and the more marks you will get
-
Be Clear About Your Audience:
To communicate well you need to get into the mind of your audience so you can present your ideas in a way that they will be able to understand. Always find out as much as you can about your audience before you start writing. In exams and assignments at school and university, it is important that you take into account that your teachers will mark your work as if they were not really experts – they will take their teachers’ hats off when assessing your material.
-
Be Clear About Your Purpose:
If you don’t have a target you won’t be able to hit it! Always write down what change you are trying to achieve in your audience before you start writing – preferably make it a behavioural change – what will your audience do differently after reading or listening to your presentation.
Do You Get Stage Fright?
If you get terrified talking to a large group of people even though you have no trouble talking to a few people at a time you are not alone, this is one of the most common phobias in the world. Provided you do your preparation properly, and follow the appropriate steps when you are writing your speech, you can overcome this fear by changing your Mind Set – in other words, changing the way you view the situation. It does take time and practice to change your Mind Set, but it’s not hard once you know how.
The Best Time to Learn Essay Writing and Speech Writing Is Now
All students should be following a step-by-step process for writing essays and other materials from Junior High School on. As students progress to higher levels, the strategy does not change although it does need to be adapted slightly as the concepts discussed become more abstract and sophisticated. The process is easy to learn and follow, but does require practice so that it is mastered to the point that essays can be written quickly under exam conditions.
